The AI power story is quietly entering its most lucrative phase, and almost everyone is looking in the wrong direction.
Most investors know AI needs electricity.
Few have connected that demand to the companies supplying transformers, substations, switchgear, and transmission infrastructure.

Today we move one step deeper into the stack.
Grid Infrastructure.
Generating electricity is only half the equation.
The power still has to reach the data center.
That’s where the next bottleneck emerges.
Every AI data center requires transformers, substations, switchgear, transmission lines, and distribution networks.
The grid was not built for the scale of demand AI is creating.
As utilities expand and modernize the grid, a multi-decade infrastructure opportunity is emerging.
Why The Grid Can't Keep Up with AI demand
The grid was built for gradual demand growth.
AI is creating exponential demand growth.
Three bottlenecks are emerging:
1. Transformer Shortages
Transformer lead times have stretched from 24 months in 2019 to 5 years today per HSBC industry data
Transformers are required to connect new substations, transmission projects, and data centers.
Demand is growing faster than supply.
2. Transmission Constraints
PJM, the largest US grid operator, received 220 gigawatts of new generation applications by April 2026.
Total capacity actually connected in all of 2025: 2.1 gigawatts. The queue is growing 100 times faster than the connections.
Expanding transmission infrastructure can take years.
3. Interconnection Backlogs
Data centers cannot connect to the grid until utilities approve and upgrade infrastructure.
In many regions, projects are waiting years for connection.
The result is simple:
AI power demand is growing faster than the grid can expand.
The Investment Opportunity
Bottlenecks attract capital.
The grid is becoming one of the largest bottlenecks in the AI economy.
Utilities, hyperscalers, and governments are all increasing investment to expand grid capacity.
Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Oracle are collectively planning roughly $700 billion in 2026 capital expenditures.
Roughly 75 percent of that is targeted at AI infrastructure.
Governments are also supporting grid investment.
The U.S. Department of Energy has identified transmission expansion and grid modernization as national priority.
The White House invoked the Defense Production Act in 2026 to formally designate switchgear and substations as essential to national defense.

The grid value chain is broad.
I focus on four categories.
Transformers
Without them, new substations, transmission projects, and data centers cannot connect to the grid.
FPS – Transformers, switchgear, and power distribution systems.
HPS.A – Dry-type transformers for utilities and data centers.
Electrical Equipment
These companies supply the equipment that distributes and manages power throughout the grid.
ETN – Power management and electrical distribution leader.
POWL – Switchgear and electrical control systems.
HUBB – Transmission and distribution equipment.
NVT – Power distribution and electrical infrastructure.
Transmission & Distribution
These companies build and upgrade the infrastructure that moves electricity from generation sources to end users.
PWR – Transmission lines and substations.
MYRG – Transmission and distribution construction.
Grid Modernization
These companies help utilities improve grid capacity, reliability, and efficiency.
AMSC – Grid resiliency, transmission efficiency, and power quality.
GEV – Grid technologies, transmission systems, and utility modernization.
ITRI – Smart grid, metering, and grid intelligence solutions.
